Fall Soil Sampling: Maximize Your Profit Potential

July 23, 2020 | By: Eric Phipps

We are rapidly approaching the end of the 2020 growing season.  After the combine is done and tillage has started, there is a very important step to consider: soil sampling.  Soil health and fertility rank high on the totem pole when it comes to high productivity.  Soil sampling allows us a portal into the world below, checking for essential nutrient levels like phosphorus and potassium as well as checking organic matter, soil pH, and macro/micronutrients.

The correct balance of nutrients in the soil helps you grow the best crop with the correct amount of inputs.  Would you consider washing your car in the rain?  No, that is counter productive and a waste of time and money.  The same applies to nutrients and liming considerations.  Over applying is not recommended for many reasons; expense and environmental impacts lead the list.  With current soil samples, Farm Nutrients sales staff can accurately recommend economical application rates for both fertilizer and lime.  Many, if not all, farming inputs have continued to increase in price.  Utilizing a soil test will help you maximize your profit potential by making sure your soil has what it needs to produce a top yielding crop.  Fields can be enrolled now for fall sampling to occur in a timely fashion.
